Physical Features

This page is the physical features group and on this page you will find information on the physical features such as the geology of Mackerel Cove, currents, tides, the  latitude and longitude.

Where is Mackerel Cove?

Mackerel Cove is located on Bailey Island, Harpswell, Maine.  The latitude is 43.727 and the longitude is -69.999.  Mackerel Cove has a fishing  dock and most of Bailey Island's fishing business is located there.

What kind of rock is at Mackerel Cove?
The most common rock in Mackerel Cove is  metamorphic and comes from the Cape Elizabeth formation. The rock at Mackerel cove is at risk of eroding for several reasons.  Normal trash such as food wrappers and fishing gear does not effect the rock.  Battery acid and fertilizer high in nitrates can erode the rock.  If this happens the ecosystem of Mackerel cove could be at risk.

The geology of Mackerel Cove has a big impact on the animals that live there.
The rocks were made when sedimentary rock was turned in to metamorphic rock by high temperatures and pressure.         .

Where is the trash coming from?

The red line is Mackerel Cove.
The green line is where the trash could come from.
The currents in the Gulf of Maine play a big part in how the trash gets in to Mackerel cove.  Looking at this map you can see that trash could come from the whole east coast of Mackerel cove and as far away as the Bay of Fundy.  The trash in Mackerel cove could show that the trash problem is more wide spread.

What are the tides?
The chart below shows the low and high tides of Mackerel Cove from
12/10/08 to the 12/18/08.

This graph shows the tides over an eight day period. The highest tide was 12.95 feet on 12/14/2008. On 12/13/2008 was the lowest tide(-1.96 feet)

The tides are made by the gravitational pull of the moon on the water. The tides are what bring trash such as lobster traps and rope on to the beach.
