What kind of rock is at Mackerel Cove?
The most common rock in Mackerel Cove is metamorphic and comes from the Cape Elizabeth formation. The rock at Mackerel cove is at risk of eroding for several reasons. Normal trash such as food wrappers and fishing gear does not effect the rock. Battery acid and fertilizer high in nitrates can erode the rock. If this happens the ecosystem of Mackerel cove could be at risk.
The geology of Mackerel Cove has a big impact on the animals that live there. The rocks were made when sedimentary rock was turned in to metamorphic rock by high temperatures and pressure. .
